I started a Meetup group a couple of weeks ago to meet with other homeschoolers in a casual playgroup situation and we’ve had 3 events so far. I have met lots of new moms now – 3 the first time, 1 the next, and 4 today. I am started to get really encouraged! Grace actually beamed to me and ran to tell me that she’d made 2 new friends. Michael even made one! Grace informed me that Heath made 3 friends, but he was silent on the matter (har har… he hardly talks, much less telling us anything that complex…).
Today’s meetup was my favorite so far. We went to a free indoor play area that a nearby church has open any time their office is open. That was pretty awesome in itself! It’s a huge indoor play area with 2 huge bumpy slides and about 3-4 levels of things to do and VERY clean. There’s also a toddler area, TONS of tables and chairs (really nice wood ones), a diaper changing area, hand sanitizer sprinkled throughout in little dispensers…. oh yeah. 🙂
Anyway, you know that a meetup has gone well when we’ve discussed birth stories and breastfeeding for at least 20 minutes. 😛 I’m starting to really feel like I am going to have friends here. Like for real. I really think my kids will, too. Something I find interesting is that several folks in the group just moved here, too! Other members have been suggesting all the meetups and they have put some really fun events on the calendar. We’re going to be going to a pumpkin patch, a nature preserve, and a really neat museum that uses old buildings and old artifacts to teach folks about life in the area in the early 1900s. I am still having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that there IS this much to do here.
Now I just need to find some friends that I can meet up with late at night. haha
Hubby has been getting home late *every* work night (ugh – so not used to this yet) and this mama needs a night (or two or three) out and away from children. For those of you that are friends with me in real life, you know what this means. IHOP or Denny’s around 11pm. hahaha I am wild! 😛
For those of you that have moved before, how did you get plugged in? How long did it take to feel like you belonged there?
