Vocabulary Spelling City Review

Vocabulary Spelling City
So many homeschoolers scratch their heads at which curriculum to use for spelling and vocabulary.  Not only that, but then they have to come up with engaging ways for their students to actually learn and master the material.  One solid choice for this need is Vocabulary Spelling City.
This website has tons of premade spelling lists to choose from, if you wish, or you can create your own.  In addition, there are games, tests, teaching tools, flash cards, and more to correlate with lists.  There are printable activities as well as online based games and exercises.  This website can be used for children as young as Pre-K and can be used up all the way through high school since it is highly customizable!

There is also a Premium Membership available.  In addition to the regular features, teachers (or home educators) have the option to group their students and lists, have different logins for separate students, get rid of advertising while using the site, and access premium learning activities.  Premium membership also gives you access to progress tracking, automatic test results, and activity logs, among many other features. Premium membership costs just $29.99 for families of up to 5 students per year.  The also have classroom pricing for school teachers as well.
My family enjoyed looking over and using many of these awesome features on the site.  Prior to trying the program out, I thought this website was simply a free place to type in your spelling list and come up with a few printables to help out.  Boy, was I wrong!  There is soooo much more.
The best part of this site is the fact that the “boring” spelling words are transformed so much.  For example, your student can do a fun matching game (complete with graphics and music) to match the word to sentences or to the definitions.  Another cool game is Speedy Speller, in which the student has to see how quickly they can spell the words.
I love any product that I can use for multiple children.  With the handwriting practice sheets, which are customizable by font size and even if you want the arrows to help with letter formation, I know that I will be using this program with my Kindergartener for sure!   I have been going through some of the pre-k word lists with him, so now I will be getting him started at grade level for the new school year using some of the premade lists available on Vocabulary SpellingCity.com.
Not only can this program be used for vocabulary and spelling, but you could truly expand this to teach so much more of your language arts program.  There are sentence and paragraph writing exercises, handwriting sheets, alphabetizing activities, and many other skills incorporated right into the website.
My 2nd grader will likely be taking advantage of more of the sentence or paragraph writing exercises since she is perfectly capable of writing the words themselves fairly well.  I always find that assigning writing assignments that are relevant to at least one other subject helps her to stay focused and interested in the spelling.  I also think it helps her to memorize the words better because she can associate it with something besides just an unrelated list of words.  Not only will she be learning the words, but she’ll be writing about them, learning their definitions, listening to them and their spelling, and playing fun games that help with her typing as well!  I may even load in word lists that relate to what she is learning about in history or science for an even more relevant lesson.
I am very much looking forward to using this site to reinforce my own custom spelling lists.  I also love that I could choose from some of the pre-loaded lists (and I could even sneak and peek and use spelling words from local schools that use the program!).  I would recommend this as an easy, inexpensive, and very thorough spelling and vocabulary program.
As always, you can see what other Schoolhouse Review Crew members said about this product as well.
