I feel very blessed that we were able to move into a brand new house. I’ve heard horror stories about pipe bursting, major flooding causing black mold, clogged pipes, and roots obstructing pipes as well in older homes. What I didn’t REALLY expect was that I would have a plumbing issue of my own in my brand new house!
Picture this: it is moving day into your brand new home and the in-laws are watching the kids. Your husband and his friends painstakingly unload the moving truck, furniture is being assembled, and everything seems to be coming together nicely. Suddenly, you receive a call from your mother in-law informing you that 2 of your 4 young children are barfing all over the place at her house. Holy.Cow. If you haven’t figured it out already, this was my delightful moving day and those sick children were mine. Boo!
My kids rarely get sick, so that was surprising. We hurried and took the moving truck back and immediately went to pick up the kids. They made sure to puke a few times while we were over there, and boy was it an elaborate process. Oh boy. My visions of this move didn’t include dealing with bodily fluids over the first weekend at the new house!
Imagine, then, my shock when the next day, I noticed that my shower water wasn’t draining toward the end of my shower. “Well that stinks!”, I thought, and put a call in to the folks that sold us the home. Luckily, they’re easy to work with and she recommended that I give a call to their emergency number for plumbers (it was Sunday, after all, so not normal business hours). I tried to brush it off because it was no emergency, right? Wrong-o! Within an hour, I looked, and my gorgeous new garden tub was filled half-way with reddish brown human waste. Cue the disbelief and feeling of barfing myself. Bleh!!!
I gave a call to the plumbers, and seriously, within 4 hours we had the entire issue resolved. I had actually read about this happening prior to building our home. The builder had a review from someone saying this had happened to them and they were warning people not to build with them because of it. The problem was that the pipes had been clogged with construction debris, which is exactly what happened in our case as well. Instead of being mad and throwing a baby fit on the internet, I worked with the REAL people that help run the company I bought through, and the issue got resolved almost immediately!! I am so thankful, too!
Did I expect to have plumbing troubles in a new home? NO! Was it the end of the world? Not at all! Now our water flows freely and we have not had any more issues. I hope that we never will, but with 4 kids under 8, we’re bound to have a flushed toy or jewelry eventually, or so I’ve been told. 🙂

Passive grease traps are the most common type of grease trap. They consist of a holding chamber with a buffer or series of buffers to slow and cool the waste water. The first buffer makes sure that the waste water enters slowly from the top, and the second lets water out slowly through the bottom.

Overuse of heavy cleaners kills beneficial bacteria in the septic tank, so solids won’t break down as well.
