Practicing math was easy with the FlipCards, each tailored specifically to the Unit she was working on. |
The FlipCards are really neat! They are heavy and laminated, so they are perfect for using with dry erase markers for practice, or your child can use them just by eyeballing it. The front has the problem they are trying to solve, and the back has the answer. This is a great way for siblings to quiz each other, too, or for other caregivers or children to practice math facts in a really easy way. I loved that they were specifically geared toward each unit. Once a set is mastered, you can put them up for later review or to use with another child down the road!
Once we really got started with the program, my daughter really flourished. She began liking math again because she knew that it was going to be a fun time of learning. The TouchMath Tutor Second Grade Software was a really fun addition to her math time! She loved it because she got to know and practice math facts, with lots of other fun sprinkled in! On the very first day, she was hooked as she actually got to learn about states we had been talking about through the games and assessment. The people that designed the software did a great job finding ways to get the kids interested. This is NOT a dry, boring program at all! It is beautiful and colorful, with fun tidbits of information throughout. Another feature I liked is that there is a status bar at the top of the screen so the child can see their progress through each exercise in a non distracting way.
Each day with the program, we worked on the Activity Sheets, and then I let her decide if she wanted to do the software or if she wanted to practice with the other manipulatives. We tried to make FlipCards a regular part of our program throughout the day or when we were out and about. They are nice and portable!
Grace found the system easy to implement using the Student Number Cards! |
The Student Number Cards were another favorite, because they provided small reminders of the TouchMath system and the TouchPoint placement. She kept a set in sheet form, as shown, but she kept another set separated (there are perforations around each number, so it’s easy to break apart) sort of like a deck of cards.
The Touch Numerals were another terrific manipulative! If your child learns by doing, or is a kinesthetic learner, take note of these! They allow the child to “do” math by using the actual numerals and place the dots. This is a fun way to practice all of the skills they are learning in the main curriculum! My daughter loves this sort of learning, so she had a blast practicing various math problems completely on her own just because she was able to play with them! This is a good way to almost trick the kids into doing math practice. It’s a genius idea, really!
One of my favorite parts of this program is that the material can be used with multiple children within a family. For me, that is absolutely essential when it is time to decide which curriculum will work each year. Any time I can reuse manipulatives or books, the value of the program goes much higher for me, as I have 4 children that I will eventually homeschool! Right now, I just have 2, but how fun will it be to pull out the TouchMath when my younger kiddos are ready.
Not only that, but the manipulatives are great for many of the levels. The TouchPoint Posters, Student Number Cards, Math Fans, Skip Counting Poster, Desktop Touchlines, and the TouchNumerals with Base 10 could all be introduced to my other children as early as pre-k or kindergarten to get them started with the TouchMath way of thinking and problem solving.
I plan on keeping the posters up and the Desktop TouchLines on our school table so that the others will always have that information as well to keep in mind as they get older and begin to do more math! My kindergarten son is already very interested, and I will be looking into their 1st grade program for him next year. He has done well with math this year, and I think that even if we end up using a different program, these manipulatives are here to stay!
I highly recommend this math program to anyone with a student that needs more. Even if you are only able to purchase the download, the way of doing math is so simple – but effective – that your child will surely begin to work with numbers in a whole new way. Concepts that used to be difficult may suddenly make sense! TouchMath gives students the ability to truly put their math experience back into their own hands, teaching them skills to complete problems in a memorable and sensible way. We love it, and you may find that it’s been what you’ve been looking for!
