My first writing prompts post was very well received, so I thought I would do another one! It is so important to inspire creativity among children so that they can really use their imaginations and discover not only themselves, but also the world around them in meaningful ways.
It’s also wonderful to write down one’s thoughts and feelings for reviewing and analyzing later. I know that any time I find a little gem from a few or many years ago, it is always incredible to see where I came from and who I’ve become since then! My, how things change. 🙂
These prompts are written for students of all ages, and can be catered to their age levels. Just make sure that your expectations of the answers match their ability levels. Don’t be afraid to challenge them, though. You might be surprised at what your child is capable of!
Writing Prompts for Students
- Create a new type of cuisine for a restaurant you are opening. Develop a menu and descriptions of some of the foods you will offer.
- Think about how you celebrated the last holiday. Describe it to someone that has never heard of it or celebrated it before. Where there special foods, songs, dances, clothes, or places involved? Why was this holiday special to you?
- Write a poem about your socks. It can be sad, serious, or funny!
- Pretend that your job is to answer questions for people in a column for a newspaper. Write an answer back to this person: “My friends in the neighborhood sometimes call me mean names and tease me because I have crooked teeth and wear glasses. What should I do?”
- In a letter, try to convince your parents to let you start a new hobby or sport that you’re not currently involved with. Sewing? Soccer? Playing the drums? Get creative and be sure to tell them why you think it would be a good idea to get started.
- Finish this thought: “My 3 favorite places to be are….”
- Write a funny story about a woman named Loud Lucy and her cat named Wonky Whiskers.
- What is the purpose of shoes? Why are there so many different kinds?
- Tell me about the last time you made a new friend. How did you begin to talk and when did you realize that you were going to be friends? What made that person special?
- Write a TV commercial advertising your favorite toothpaste. Make sure it tells about its purpose, its flavor, and why it is better than all of the rest!
- Write about some ways that you could make some money for yourself. If you can’t think of anything you could do right now, what about when you are older?
- Who has taught you the most about animals or pets? Why are they a good teacher and what have you learned?
- Retell the story from a book you recently read or heard.
- Write a movie review about your favorite movie. Why should other people see it? What makes it great?
- Think about a person you know that does amazing things and write about it. How are you and this person alike? How are you different?
- Write a song about your favorite season.
- Step by step, write instructions for getting ready for bed.
- How and why do dogs communicate with each other?
- What will you be doing 2 years from now?
- Describe your feelings about waking up in the morning.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed these writing prompts! I’d love to hear how you and your student are using them in your homeschool or household.
