Perfectly Pink Fruit Smoothie #cleaneating #paleo #realfood

Smoothies are such a delicious food.  I guess a fruit smoothie also qualifies as a drink.  Either way, when I feel like our family needs a boost of nutrition or we just have some overripe fruits, smoothies are on the menu!  Yesterday afternoon, we had this perfectly pink fruit smoothie.  It was a refreshing snack that my kids and I all loved.

I made this recipe without the optional honey, and it was sweet enough for us because of the bananas.  Feel free to play with it however you’d like to suit your own tastes!

Prep Time: 2 minutes

Total Time: 2 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk of choice (I use almond, but you could use coconut, cow's milk, etc)
  • 6 oz container of raspberries (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 bananas (frozen)
  • 1 apple
  • 1 Tbsp flaxseed meal (ground flaxseed)
  • 1 Tbsp honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients together in a blender.

Notes

If you are using a high powered blender, such as a Vitamix, your apple can be used with the skin on. If you are using a standard blender, I recommend peeling and chopping it up into smaller pieces before using.

Smoothies aren’t just for summer, either!  We like to make them year round to get an extra boost of vitamins and minerals.

Fruit Smoothie Ideas

I like to play around with what I add to them.  Coconut oil or chia seeds are additions that I put in sometimes.  Either one of those will help keep you feeling full longer, so adding them to a meal replacement smoothie is a good idea.

You’ll notice that I don’t use juice in my smoothies.  I used to, but we have given up juice since going paleo, so I leave it out now.  When I did use it, I would often use apple juice for its sweetness and would omit sweeteners like honey when I used it.  More tart juices, like cherry or cranberry, are full of antioxidants, but require more sweetening.

Are you wild about smoothies like me?  You might want to give some of my other fruit smoothie recipes a try.  These have surprise veggies in them, but are still sweet and delicious.  Check out the Banana Blueberry Surprise Smoothie and the ugly but tasty Easy Green Smoothie.

What do you love in your smoothies?

Are there any extra “secret ingredients” that you like to throw into the mix for a little extra nutritional value?
