No, I am not pregnant.
Let me repeat that:
NO I AM NOT PREGNANT.
However, I am just a tad bit obsessive about our family’s formula for baby names.
We didn’t start out with a formula at all, but as we’ve continued to have children, a semi-complex pattern has emerged.
My kids are Grace O., Michael A., Heath A., and Charlie A.
The pattern is that first names go in alternating amounts of letters, either 5 or 7. Additionally, the name has to contain an A and an E. Not only that, but boys have middle names that begin with A. I guess girls would have O middle names?
Here’s what I have so far:
If we ever decide to expand our family, or to just satisfy my crazy ADD mind, it would be important to have some 5 letter names with A and E on hand.
5 letter names
Girls:
- Paige
- Hazel
- Avery
Boys:
- Ethan
- Avery
Middle Name Ideas
Girls:
- Ophelia
- My grandmother’s first name, which actually starts with an L and is unusual, would be great but wouldn’t fit the pattern. (How crazy would that drive me?)
Boys:
- Asher
- Avery
- Aaron
- Alec
- Alexander
- Alvin (also my late grandfather’s name)
- Anson
I know, I know, I’m crazy. This is the kind of stuff that keeps me up at night, sometimes until 1 or 2 in the morning. 🙂 Okay, not the only thing, but it’s something I think about to try and get me to sleep.
Similarly..
This obsessive “game” of mine kind of reminds me of a game my 5th grade teacher had us play. It was making Dollar Words. Each letter of the alphabet had a worth measured in cents based on its placement in the alphabet. E, for instance, was worth 5 cents and Z was worth 26 cents. The goal was to come up with as many words that totaled exactly $1.00 when the sum of all of its letters were combined.
This was an activity that we were told to do after we finished our quizzes and tests, and if we listed the words at the very top of our paper and turned it in with our assignment, it was worth bonus points.
I can’t tell you how many hours I thought about dollar words. An unhealthy amount, I assure you.
Back to the point…
If any of you have some stellar suggestions, I’d love it! I have been thinking about this since before Charlie’s birth!! Not only did I stress about his name fitting the pattern, but I went ahead and stressed about hypothetical subsequent kids. Maybe I am a little weird.

Our formula isn’t as complicated…. two syllable first names and one syllable middle names.
Some girl middle names to consider….. Opal, Olive, Olivia, Oak

Thanks for now putting the idea of “Dollar Words” in my head. I’ll be doing that all the time now.
And, now I’m annoyed that my kids’ names have NO pattern. Just great! It’s Mark A., Anthony M., Lauren N., and Deanna R. What the heck kind of pattern is THAT? None, I tell you, NONE! Now I’ll obsess over that for who-knows-how-long.
Here’s an obsessive thing that I do with words/names…I silently count the letters in my head to see if the total is even or odd. I prefer even, obviously.

This is hilarious, especially considering that a year later you now actually have to pick a name. Will it fit the pattern?
