Shark Bite Jell-O Shots (for Adults OR Kids!)

Shark Bite Jello Shots

Alright, who here is interested in Shark Week?  My kids are, but I honestly don’t get into it like they do.  I do like to make it a kind of learning experience – like a shark mini-unit for homeschooling right in the middle of summer.  It’s one of those things that they enjoy and don’t realize they’re learning.

Along with the wonder of sharks, it’s also a great reminder of the dangers of the ocean. I want my kids to respect nature. I want them to learn about the vastness of our oceans, the conservation efforts going on, the damage that we, as humans, are doing to the fragile ecosystems, and to think of ways that we can help, even though we live hours from the Gulf of Mexico ourselves.

Here’s an idea.  While you’re having fun focusing on SHARK WEEK, invite your friends and their kids over for a Shark Week Party and serve something that both kids and moms will love.

How CUTE are these? Your mom friends will be totally Jello-ous (groan, I know!) of your creative skills in the kitchen.

For the kids, you can call them “Shark Bite Jell-O Cups” and leave out the booze. The kids will think you’re pretty much the coolest mom ever to come up with such a gruesome themed treat for everyone.  I know my boys would love this, since the red Jell-O is the bloody red water after the shark bite. Gross and fun!

Supplies Needed:

Shot glasses or small plastic cups (these little red solo shot glasses are perfect, and these clear mini dessert cups are great, too)

I recommend using different cups for grown ups and for kids if you will be making alcoholic shots AND nonalcoholic snack cups.  Be sure that no one gets them mixed up.  Safety first, ALWAYS.

Red Jell-O mix (strawberry or raspberry flavored work best)

Water – 1 ½ cups

Vodka – ½ cup*

*For kid safe version, just mix the Jell-O per the package instructions, using 1 cup hot water and 1 cup cold water.

Directions to Make Jell-O shots:

One package of Jell-O makes about 15 shots.

1. Pour the Jell-O mix into a small bowl.

2. Heat 1 cup water in the microwave for 1 minute.

3. Pour 1 cup hot water on Jell-O mix and stir until the mix is dissolved.

4. Add ½ cup cold water to the bowl and stir.

5. Add ½ vodka to the bowl and stir. Be careful not to over-stir, which may create bubbles. If bubbles start to appear, just let the mix settle for a minute and they should go away.

6. Line up your shot glasses in a plastic container. This just makes moving the shots around easier and also contains any drips.

7. Place a gummy shark into each shot glass or kids cup.

8 . Fill each shot glass or kid’s cup about 3/4 full.

9. Let the Jell-O set completely in the fridge for about 2-3 hours.

You might need to place the Jell-O cups in a warm water bath to loosen the Jell-O from the sides of the cup, or just serve it with a spoon.
